Title: atomic physics; KE and TE
Post by: xstrae on November 14, 2006, 02:12:36 PM
How much will the kinetic energy and total energy of an electron in H atom change if the atom emits a photon of wavelength 4860Ao?

[Solution : KE increases by 2.553 eV and TE decreases by 2.553eV]

I used E = hc/? and calculated the energy lost in emitting a photon. It came out to be 2.533eV
Total energy of ground state H atom = -13.6eV

so total energy increases by 2.553eV.
is this correct? and how do I calculate the change in kinetic energy?

thanks for your time.
