Title: The chicken or the Egg?
Post by: ActivationEnergy on October 14, 2011, 05:57:58 PM
Which came first?
the egg.
My reasoning?
other animals laid eggs before chickens... ;)

The mutation which produced the chicken from its evolutionary pro-chicken ancestor must have been present in the germ cells of the ancestor. Therefore, the prototypical chicken hatched from an egg containing a mutation derived from its evolutionary ancestor. The egg was a chicken egg before there was a chicken. The egg came first.

I could say that "the mutation which produced the egg from its evolutionary pro-egg ancestor must have been present in the germ cells of the ancestor. Therefore, the prototypical egg hatched from an chicken containing a mutation derived from its evolutionary ancestor. The egg becomes from a chicken before there was an egg. The chicken came first." ;) but, now seriously, I think that the response to this ancient dilemma is: none

This. I think if you actually use biology and what not to explain what came first, an actual chicken or egg, then the point of the question is lost.

Do we really care if it’s a chicken or an egg????
