Title: Mixing sodium hypochlorite and quaternary ammonia
Post by: Tango on February 22, 2012, 03:52:36 PM
Hi,

Can somebody let me know what reaction takes place when quaternary ammonia and chlorine bleach are mixed together? Is reaction the same as when bleach and ammonia are mixed?

Thanks.

Do you mean the ammonium cation NH4+, or an organic ammonium salt R4N+?

I mean R4N+. Particularly alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, a common sanitizing/disinfecting compound. Thanks.

Hypochlorite is a pretty good nucleophile, so you may be able to *Ignore me, I am impatient* a methyl group off, and bleach tends to be very basic so you may get an elimination of some sort. Honestly, I wouldn't go mixing the two.
