I put magnesium strip in water hoping to form Mg(OH)2 but instead, after a few days, there were lumps of white and black stuff everywhere. What is wrong? Even MgO is white!

Maybe some biological impurities. Magnesium salts all white.

I checked out black magnesium on Youtube and found a chemist doing a magnesium corrosion experiment to make MgO, but got black stuff instead. We're on the same boat.
