Title: About addition of internal standard ferrocene for CV

How do you guys add the internal standard ferrocene??

Some add TOGETHER with the sample but I add it separately. I think both of them work fine, but there is someone who says adding separately is wrong....

Internal means you have to add. Otherwise its an external standard.

Can you please expand on what you do/order of addition?

i.e. I work in electrocatalysis. I cannot add ferrocene until the final step, to make sure ferrocene does not affect catalysis or act in conjunction with my system.

I am doing Cyclic Voltammetry where the ferrocene is the standard whose HOMO is known to be -4.8eV.

My protocol is (actually taught by some senior in former school): after measuring the sample without ferrocene. Then run a final run of ferrocene and the E1/2 of this run will be the reference point, i.e. -4.8eV.

But I was told I had to add ferrocene together with sample as "internal standard". I am NOT saying that adding ferrocene with sample is wrong, but running separately is also fine and this is NOT wrong
