Title: AP test
Post by: rctrackstar2007 on May 05, 2006, 03:34:08 PM
Who all here is taking the AP Chemistry test this Wednesday?

Do you feel prepared?

Trying to intimidate your opponents?  :D

No, i'm trying to see where everyone else is standing. I don't believe to be intimidating many people when I expect to only get a low to mid 4. I am just curious as to where people are standing and what measures they are taking to prepare for the test.

Im one of the lucky few at my school who are about to take the AP exam. I feel pretty confident after taking two practice exams (previously released APs from '87 and 96') one of which was my final. I recieved 5's on both of them , but im still going to lightly study equilibrium (especially solubility) in order to get better at answering question #1. Nuclear chemistry, and atomic structure/quantum numbers etc. are also on my hit list. I am really good with reaction prediction so I am hoping that will maybe help me get a nice, solid 4 or a low 5 on the actual test.

ya i'm getting better at reaction prediction but not quite there yet. i get about half the points possible or so. i get caught up on spectator ions. i also need to get down knowing the structures too because i almost always choose the wrong ones.

I recommend you check out this document. It really helped me out with the reaction prediction.  http://www.shs.nebo.edu/Faculty/Haderlie/apchem/Q4.pdf

Also, try to memorize the solubility rules.

Im really having a tough time with drawing lewis structures. Even seemingly simple ones such as O3 and CO3-. Thats another thing im going to have to really look over before the test.

Im taking it and quite frank i think that you (rctrack star) sound a little over confident. Ive put in many saturdays and sundays with a few friends for study work and prep and we all still feel nervous. Id also like to say that the most of the past exams are not what this ap test will be like. It has become much harder from the opinions and things ive heard from people who have taken it from past years(who have also taken past exams prior to the ap test).  Id also suggest you brush up on electro chemistry due to it being a manditory on the free response.  Best of luck to you all though

I am so nervous about it! Chem is my absolute worst subject (well that and math, I'm really more of a liberal arts type of person). For the next couple of days I'm planning on just reviewing 24/7. I hope it'll help. I am awful at the predicting products part too. I feel like that part is just pure memorization.

yeah i have heard the same.... i did not know that electrochemistry is a mandatory in the next AP....
In my school, thanks to the Hurricane season and 2 and a half weeks lost of school we are so delayed we will be having the test for the electrochemistry chapter after the exams, we have not even finished reviewing the chapter and we only have one more class together.  the past few days have been brutal, i have been studying for endless hours, but the subject matter is starting to get boring, and other stuff is getting more amusing then chemistry which is not good because i usually find my self playing a game.

So does any one know a good site that will kind of give an over view of everything in chemistry we have learned so far?  Or actually what have you guys been doing as far as any techniques for studying for this exam?

i have been going to [a href="http://www.sparknotes.com/chemistry/"]Sparknotes[/a] and viewing what they have on chemistry.

I also used to look for college lectures dealing on chemistry and used to find some interesting ones that did not explain everything, and some really boring ones from places like MIT that explained everything but where so high leveled that you just got lost.

either way hope for the best of luck for those of you taking the AP's this wednesday..

me too! I'm working toward a 5 as well but I'm expecting a 4.
mrdeadman: i would suggest making the "do you want to be a part of the ap chem squad" into a hyperlink so that it is easy to join and I'll be chem squad member [003] or whatever

well that's good because no one else is going to give up their number, oh, and if anyone else wants to join just for the sheer entertainment of applying it to their sig, be my guest, just go in numerical order. :)

well if we're going in roman numerals i'll take like 1981248721304123948 just for fun then lol

but ya no one is getting my [002]

who all is going on the physics trip thursday from our class?

p.s. i love how the HS room and the general discussion is being dominated by us now lol furgy will be proud
Title: Re: AP test

indeed, we should get Mr. F to join. anyway, here's who i know of that is going from our chem class:

myself
you, of course
tyler
matt
malcolm
marie
tanille

others i'm not sure, except i know ryan's not going
Title: Re: AP test

there are only two others possible lol

if furganwinkle joined he would be in the engineering stuff having fun and then come to ours to tell us when we're wrong or tell us that we're genious'

if we have to really do worksheets and stuff on the trip i'm gonna flip

vital importance? you think one night of last minute studying is going to send you from a 2 to a 5 or something? the important part is what we have already done all year, and of course the energy drinks in the morning ;)

hey guys have any of you figured out why number 55 on the 02 test is first order.

here is the question

Time (days)   0     1   2   3   4  5   6   7  10  20
%Reactant    100 79 63 50 40 31 25 20 10   1
Remaining

we know the half life is 3 days but why is it first order?

Title: Re: AP test
Post by: rctrackstar2007 on May 09, 2006, 11:41:46 PM
i thought it first because it progresses at a constant 3 days instead of 3-9-27. that is probably wrong but it got the right answer.

mike...

delta g is gibbs free energy-tells spontaneity of reaction, delta s is entropy-tells how orderly the products are in relation to the reactants.

Cr3+
and a positive delta g is nonspontaneous.

neg delta S means the reaction becomes more entropoetic (??wordage??) as it proceeds

neg delta G means spontaneous

i have a standard reduction potentials in aqueous solution at 25C sheet and Cr3+ is -0.74
can i assume we will be given that sheet on the test tomorrow?

Chromium is a metal and it certainly isnt't green! (it is chrome colored surprisingly! ;))
Cr2+(aq) is turquoise
Cr3+(aq) is blue-violet (to me it looks green (maybe when excess orange dichromate (as oxidising agent) is used it makes the 'bluey' Cr3+ look greenish), but I'm just quoting my book!)
Cr2O3 is green
CrO3 is yellow
K2CrO4 is yellow (CrO42-(aq) is yellow!)
K2Cr2O7 is orange (Cr2O72-(aq) is orange)

Anyway, how did the test go?

That green solution was not chromium, chromium looks like this:
and it has a melting point of 1857oC
That green solution is most probably Cr(OH)4- (which is a soluble Chromium(III) hydroxide, as excess hydroxide may have been added- like how cobalt (and Zn) hydroxide go soluble with conc. hydroxide (because they become negatively charged)). But I don't know for sure (I do know its NOT chromium!), and if anyone could confirm/correct this that'd be great. ;D

well my printer won't print so i'm not going to start it right now but just use PV=nRT to answer that. Or if you want to use her formula: V1/T1=V2/T2. Don't forget to change the temperatures to K.

I don't have my calc handy but if u really want the answer tell me and i'll work it out.

STP is standard temperature and pressure... you're thinking of the conversion factor. Just add 273 to the celcius value to get Kelvin. Or 273.15 to be exact.

If I learned anything in Chemistry I'm pretty sure you do need to convert to Kelvin. Of course, she might not know that.

Total time logged in: 7 hours and 15 minutes.  :-\ that's pretty sad, because everytime i leave the site it logs me out.

It doesn't work this way - it assumes you are logged continuously if you fetch next page in less then about 15-20 minutes after previous one. So I have chemicalforums open at least 16 hours a day but the system doesn't count all that time, as I am often off to other tasks for an hour or so.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_conditions_for_temperature_and_pressure for the list of different temperatures as defined by different chemistry/physics etc. institutions. It is mostly either 273.15K or 293.15K, but at A-Level 293.15K is used, and I think thats the temperature that is most frequently quoted.

I think that question is best asked in a chemistry forum. ;) (ie not the general discussion forum)!

I don't know how you guys got over 200 posts in this tread in like 48 hours but wow.

:o Ask a mod! I have never ever taken a scooby snack before from anyone (I was one of the people to give you a snack, syko!)!!! I don't care if you guys took mine last night, scooby snacks are the last thing on my mind.
Please read what lemonoman said:
Quote
The reaction is reversible.  The WHOLE time you have an HCl-in-water mixture, I don't care what concentration it is...HCl molecules will be dissociating into H+ (as H3O+) and Cl- ... just as H+ and Cl- will be simultaneously recombining somewhere else.  The EQUILIBRIUM that is set up comes to rest (as in, no change occurs...but the equilibrium exists) at a point where most (i.e. 99.7%) of the HCl molecules you put in are in dissociated form.
It is just one of those boring facts of chemistry that you'll have to learn, and accept it even if you don't yet understand it.
Here are some notes on this subject from the University of British Columbia : http://www.chem.ubc.ca/courseware/pH/. The notes under section 1 explain why it is an equilibrium very clearly. Hope this helps ;).

 ionization enery. wtf?

the energy required to change the element to an ion, the energy it takes to "steal" an electron from an atom.

ok cool man. this is a bonding question. what is an easy way to figure out the shape of the bonds?

what do you mean? you mean straight or bent or tetrahedral?

yeah, yeah!!

drawing the lewis structure actually works well. remember the nonbonded pairs of electrons.

do you just take the lewis dot structure and the amount of sides is the shape? kinda, sorta?

yeah, but you have to remember the VSEPR theory. nonbonded pairs take up more space than atoms do. that's why water's shape is "bent." you guys don't have those model kits where you build the molecules? those help a lot.

so if a central atom has say nonbonded pairs on the top, then the other pairs are pushed down?

then the other atoms are pushed down, that's why NH3 is trigonal pyramidal.

you can ask more questions, i can answer them when i get back, either that or if you want to go that's cool too, also, you can post in teh high school forum and they will answer you stuff too.

the energy required to change the element to an ion, the energy it takes to "steal" an electron from an atom.

I was taught that the ionization energy is the minimum energy required to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms of that element at 298K and 1 atm.

yeah, but you have to remember the VSEPR theory.
Except in cases like PH3. YOu have to think about the sizes of the orbitals of the orbitals involved in bonding etc.

what i have been taught is exactly what mrdeadman said, that the ionization energy was the energy required to remove an electron/steal an electron thus making it an ion which is that same as the wikipedia definition

here's the address if you want to read it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionization_energy

That is a perfectly acceptable general idea of what the ionization energy means, but as a definition it is a precise measurement that has to have a standard, and the one used is normally the one I mentioned. Otherwise, the ionization energy would be impractically low to work with! For example, the first ionization energy of an atom of Barium would be 0.00000000000000000083508 Joules!
Thats why they use moles. ;)

the guy we are helping out is in general chem and you don't need to really work with what you're saying until college. so in order for him to understand it to general chem standards, the definition he should use is the one we gave him.  ;)
