Post by: Unsichtbar on May 19, 2006, 01:20:24 PM

Hey guys...

Great idea to create a ChEng Forum...  :D
I'll start to participate here...
I'm a student of Master degree in ChEng in Brazil. I work simulation of a gasifier reactor of tannery waste.

Best regards...
(I'm sorry my poor English)

Hi,
I am a Chemical & Chemistry Lover since my high school.
My first love was not a teen at the age of 14; rather it was inorganic chemistry reactions.
When I started my High school my teacher asked me to teach my own class. That caused my blood completed infected by CHEMISTRY.

So I did my Chemical Engineering from Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur India in 1994. Here I got another virus of chemical engineering in the form of TECHNOLOGY oriented improvements.

Then I Joined Ammonia & Urea Fertilizer plant in India in 1994 in the technical services Deptt., & worked there for 8 years. Then joined corporate technical cell of the same group where the key responsibility areas were Energy Audit, Technological improvements, Technical Services, Business Proposals, Business risk analysis, Technical Audits, Value addition to wastes etc. After 2 years, I shifted to corporate R&D cell in the same group for independently handling technology transfer. Recently I took a change to join the world’s first renewable source based petrochemical plant.

My industry experience is as below

-   Ammonia
-   Urea
-   Inorganic Fluoro-Chemicals
-   Organic Chloro & Fluoro Chemicals
-   Pharma Intermediates
-   Ethanol
-   Ethylene Oxide
-   MEG
-   Glycol Ethers
-   Glycol Ether Acetates
-   Fiber & Textile
-   Cement
-   Metals
-   Other Heavy & Fine chemicals
-   Hydrogen Peroxide

Technology Experience (Other than conventional methods)

-   NaF, KF, K2SiF6, Na2SiF6, K2TiF6, KHF2, NH4F, NH5F2, AlF3, HF
-   K2CO3, V2O5,
-   Chlorobenzenes, Dichlorobenzene, Chlorofluoro Anilines, Chlorofluoro nitrobenzene, Chlorophenols, dichlorofluorobenzene, Acetophenones (derivatives).
-   HF, AlF3

All of them can be developed through different routes for cost competitiveness of up to ~20% than conventional commercial routes.

My Interests

I am currently running 2 Blogs.

http://profmaster.blogspot.com for chemical professionals on technology related issues. Anyone who is interested in discussing any issues on any technology can join & discuss.

http://innocenti.blogspot.com for general management issues & other hobbies, which will appear in due course of time.

Is the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) Program at NTU popular? All I know was the NTU department was set up few years ago. I had a couple of friends who turned down their NUS offers to study CBE at NTU. Is it a new building?

It has been almost 2 years since I last stepped on Singapore soil.

Hi laural, I am Chem Eng from Albania. Congratulations on your studies.  :). And do not look down on your choice. You might get a job in Albania as well with your speciaty. Deka is growing ;) and I believe  and lot more companies should come (my opininion). Is easier to have food plants in your own home, that to export all the time. Food industry has a trend to be developed in their own places, more than to depend on others. And for outside Albania I garantie you there are tons of food chemists jobs. I know from experience of my own. Its easier to get a food chemist job, than an industrial chemist job. Keep it up.

pardon me, but what is "alimentary ch"?

where are the chemical plants in Albania?

Goedome, "alimentari ch" is "food chemistry", but they use mostly italian terms (mean language), since they have a system of coorporating studies in Albania with universities in Italia. And yes there are chemical  plants in Albania. I used to work in one of them (coating industry), and there are others more. Some I can mention are in food industry: edible oil plants (refining the oil) , detergents plants, construction pruducts plants e much more.

Everyone, have a nice day.

Its like 50-50, some of the classes in the university they are in Arabic and some in English.
At times it really gets hard when they are teaching in Arabic, had to do whole of the course on my own, and then by the blessings of Al-mighty allah the result has always been positive :),
I'm doing summer training these days and its going quite good, there are so many things that one can learn from training and if one has to go through each and every topic then it becomes quite difficult !!
Im thinking of concentrating on 1  topic and go into details, like for example last month i completed my studies on vaccuum tower, Can anyone suggest me some other good topics???

My name is Enrique but all of you can call me Quique. I´m from Mexico and I´m working in an engineering firm as a junior process engineer. I´ve been working in operations for 1 year and this is my first job in design, so, as you can see, i´m new in the process engineering business, but I like It a lot...
I graduated from bachelor´s 5 years ago, as a chemical engineer, and from the master´s degree 2 years ago.
I worked in development of new catalytic materials, studying the effect of temperature, pressure, and other constraints in the sintering of supported catalysts, I developed a original model, which is applied very well to Pt/Al2O3 supported catalysts; for the moment, in my job i´m working in the design of a HRSG, and I´m developing the calculation logs for boiler feedwater chemical treatment.

Is there anybody who knows the compositions of the NALCO 7208 reactive?
PLease, no MSDS, only technical data or chromatographies... please!!! and thank you...

    ;DSee you

I have a BS and MS in Chemical Engineering, both from the University of Washington.  I am also a licensed PE in the state of Washington.  All of my work has been in manufacturing; mostly automotive and aerospace process development.  I think I may start participating in this forum to stay sharp with respect to chemical engineering.

I am introducing myself as a Chemical Engineer here. I am such an odd thing as a Chemical Engineer and a Chemist (analytical but my degree says chemistry).

I have worked in the nuclear industry, semiconductor industry and am now back in the nuclear industry in the UK.

I am an unglorious bastard and may my arrogance put you off from reading my posts!

Hello, folks.

I graduated from Cal in 1969 with a BScChE.  Since then I also earned a MBA.  I have spent most of my career as a project engineer or project manager with E&C firms such as Bechtel, Jacobs, and IC-Engineering.  My current job is a contract process/project engineer with an oil company's research facility.  This a great fun as I get to do some actual chemical engineering and I work with the research scientists on new concepts and processes.

I am encouraged to see so many young people interested in chemical engineering.  Keep it up!

I lived in Tennessee and Houston, TX. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry (2011) and I'm going to get my Chemical Engineer degree at Tennessee Tech University in 2 more years because half of all my credits will transfer to my engineer prereq. I'm very humble and excited to tackle another degree, but yet nervous about the future of chemical engineer. I noticed we seeing a 5.9 % increasing in the job marker. But, nobody knows certain how the market will change. Has anybody in here find a job right after school in the US ? Thank you

Hi guys,

I finished my B.Tech. Chemical Engineering in 2012 and joined Cetex Petrochemicals Ltd. in Technical Service & Business Development team. Our company is the one and only manufacturer of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) via Secondary Butanol (as an Intermediate) in India. We indulged in expansion of MEK unit activities adding additional capacity of 7,500 MTPA with existing unit of 5,000 MTPA to total capacity of 12,500 MTPA. Commissioning also on the track, planned to start up of the new unit scheduled on Jan 2014.

In the meanwhile, Cortex had purchased SHELL’s MIBK (Methyl Iso Butyl Ketone) Plant located in Deer Park, Houston, Texas, US. Actually I am working in MIBK project – relocation of MIBK plant from Deer Park to Manali. MIBK Plant capacity is 30,000 MTPA with other produced includes MIBC (Methyl Iso Butyl Carbinol) and Hexylene Glycol adding up to a total outcome of nearly 50,000 MTPA. The dismantling work started and  scheduled to bring the dismantled plant within Cetex Factory site, Manali by this year end. The Erection & Commissioning will take sometime approx. one and half years, that's what we set the clock to finish the relocation and Start up scheduled in the mid of 2015. I am proud to be part of the team.

Regards,

V.M. Chenthil

Hello,

I graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2009 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering.  I worked for two years with Weatherford as a field engineer in their hydraulic fracturing division.  I worked on location in several states including West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Arkansas, and North Dakota.  I then worked as the Senior Chemical Engineer for Remington Arms in Lonoke, AR.  Almost all of Remington's ammunition is made there.

I have just started working for an ammonia and UAN fertilizer manufacturer called CF Industries in Verdigris, OK (just outside of Tulsa).  I joined the forums because I have used them in the past but with my new job being a more traditional chemical engineer setting I may need to ask a few more questions.  I hope not to embarrass myself but it has been over 4 years since I have used any of the chemical engineering I learned.

Good Morning people. I'm a chemical engineer in charge of a pesticide quality control Lab for 4 years. I've got experience in laboratory methods and production control. Haven't designed anything yet, just minor fixes in my plant.

Have a master in chemical processes, and actually I'm going for to be a chemist in one of those "distance learning universities".

I've come here mainly because I lack depth knowledge of chemical analysis processes, I carry out analysis but they are like "follow the recipe cook book", so having colleagues with better understanding of this methods it's a big advantage for me.

Nice to meet you.

Hi! I'm Giorgio  Italy. I'm not studying Engineering, but I'm attending the third year of Industrial Chemistry (at university), so the subject that I'm studying are essentially engineering (like Unit Operation, Mass and energy transport, Chemical Reactor and so on...).

I'm sorry for the language, but as you can see, it's little poor. I hope I can contribute in some way to the growth of the forum (though I imagine that will use it mainly to ask for help, ahahahaa  ;D).

Bye Bye and best of luck to everybody!

Alright I am finishing my chemical engineering degree at UNAM and now I need some way to keep reminding me to flex my other engineering muscles since specialization is due happening once you finish.

Right now I am working in two simulators using stochastic methods to solve deposition of wax crystals and greenhouse gas treatment (I wish I could say more but this is as much as I am allowed to say).

I love transport phenomena and thermodynamics (seemingly I am the only guy in my generation who likes Bird's brick hahaha!).

Also since half of my thesis is based in process design I can handle Aspen Plus fairly well (still need some training in ChemCad and HYSYS).

Also if someone feels like a question is way too trivial to be asked you can e-mail me personally and I will do my best to answer.

Hello everyone,

I am not a Chemical Engineer.... yet. I am still an undergrad  :(

I recently got back into school as I have spent the last 17 years first as a Marine Technician (10 years), and then moving full time into HVAC (7 years).  Between these two fields I have come to the conclusion that what I prefer to deal with is temperature change, chemicals, machines, and problem solving.  What I want to get away from is dealing with whiny customers. lol

I still have a long way to go, and will likely have a lot of questions as I go.  I love to tinker, although I am sure that is probably a dirty word around here.  I have performed many home experiments and have many more planned as well as a few invention ideas that I am hoping to get some testing done on.

I will apologize in advance if I throw out some ideas that seem uneducated or poorly worded, I have no problems with stumbling while learning to walk and welcome any advice anyone can ever give me.

Thanks
Gentry

Hello Experts,

I am a Chemistry student who loves the subject and always wanted to make a career in the field. I am currently in USA and want to work here in future. I have completed my education in India and have the following degree.

Master of Sciences (M.Sc) - Chemistry (From Nagpur University, India) Specialization in Physical Chemistry.

Can you please suggest me on how to approach this. Would you suggest me to take up a masters degree in USA. If yes, then what are the best courses that are available. Also, what are the best jobs that are out there for  chemistry majors.

Any advise is appreciated!

Thank you for letting me into your illustrious forum. I'm a simple EE engineer with experience in computer science and digital hardware, and I'm trying to learn more about physics as I grow older, it seems kind of important if you want to understand more of the world we live in. I'm concentrating on classical physics and slowly starting to explore more about the quantum stuff.

Dear All,

I am originally a biochemist who did a Ph D in Xray-crystallography.  I did a postdoc in it and then one in computational enzymology.

Eventually I ran my own my own business for a while but have not been doing much with it for a number of years.

I have got interested in chemical engineering as a result of this.

It would be very helpful to check that assumptions I have about certain topics are correct.  This would be very helpful to me.  If I could present them carefully and then people on the site would be kind enough to critique them that would be very useful.  A problem I have is in explaining certain concepts to others who really would benefit from a better understanding of them that I interact with quite commonly.  I think the site might help me a little with this.

Regards

Michael F

Hi!

So, first of all, I am not a chemist, but as a civil engineer I have to know some very basic chemistry principles to do my job properly.
For example being familiar with the reaction occurring in concrete, combine the materials and construction layers properly to avoid for example dissimilar metal corrosion, use the proper surface materials which are resistant to physical and chemical stress, degree of flammability of materials or what dangerous combustion product they create, etc.
And also there is other reason which is why I am interested in chemistry, and that is my hobbies.
Battery chemistry - battery packs rebuilding projects, using different chemicals as cleaning products, rust, limescale removal, repurposing old building materials, electrolysis, galvanization, electroplating etc.

Current project: Repurposing old synthetic varnishes/paints to create waterproof floor coating. Surface – Concrete, plaster and ceramic bricks

P.S.: Sorry my poor English
