Electron Affinity
« on: October 03, 2006, 06:55:37 PM »
I have the question about electron affinity: Predict the trend for electron affinity across a period. Explain your answer.
I know that it increases from left to right in a period, but I dont know why. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Think about noble gases and outer electron configurations.

What else increases from left to right in a period? Opposite attracts..

As well as electron affinity increasing as you move from left to right on the periodic table, Ionozation energy, (the energy it takes to remove an electron from the valence shell of an atom), electronegativity, and effective nuclear charge increase and the atomic radius and reactivity decrease in this direction.
