Mixing NaCl + CuCl2 with Ethanol
« on: February 10, 2007, 08:55:29 PM »
Ok, bit of a question here. We did some pracs on this at school but I still don't completely understand it.

Basically, at school we mixed Sodium Chloride and Copper (II) Chloride first with water, after we did this we were instructed to filter the mixture. Suposedly, the solvent contained both sodium chloride and copper (II) chloride.

Next we did the exact same experiment, except this time instead of mixing it with water we mixed the Sodium Chloride and Copper (II) Chloride with ethanol. This time we were told that when we filtered the mixture the solvent would contain either just sodium chloride or just copper (II) chloride.  I'm not sure which one however was the filtrate and which was the residue.

I'd also like to know why ethanol allowed them to seperate but water didn't.

Thanks for your help.

Think about which one is more soluble.  Somewhere in the book there should either be a table of solubilities for salts or ions (The table will be designed for water, but the pattern will probably be similar in this case)

Which is a better solvent of ionic materials: water or ethanol?

What was the color of the filtrate? Of the solution?
