volumetric analysis-acid base and redox
« on: September 19, 2007, 01:58:51 PM »
KA1 is a solution containing hydrated ethanedioic acid and sodium ethanedioate.
KA2 is a solution containing 3.5g potassium manganate per dm3.
KA3 is a solution containing 1.7g hydroxyl ion per dm3.
KA4 is 1.0 mol dm-3 sulphuric acid.

first titration,
pipette 25cm3 KA1 into titration flask. Add phenolphthalein and titrate this solution with KA3

25cm3 KA1 required 16.22cm3 of KA3 for complete reaction.

second titration,
pipette 25cm3 KA1 into titration flask. Then add 25cm3 of KA4.Heat this solution to about 60C and titrate the solution with KA2 until a faint pink colour persists in solution.

25cm3 KA1 required 24.47cm3 of KA2 for complete reaction.

how do i calculate,
(i) the concentration of hydrated ethanedioic acid in solution KA1?

(ii)mass of ethanedioate ion in 1 dm3 of KA1?

(iii) the concentration of of ethanedioate ions which originated from the sodium ethandioate salt?

(iv)why  solution KA4 added to solution KA1 before titration?

PLEASE HELP ME I AM KINDA LOST. Thank you
