I've read that mercury metal can absorb radiation from elements like Uranium and not become radioactive itself. Is this true?

Not very likely.  Identify the source of this information, please.  It seems like everyone -- world governments, power plant managers, and small research labs --  has missed out on something fundamental and useful.

Well the guy at the link below claims Canada is setting up a nuclear waste management plant that will utilize mercury for neutralizing the radioactive waste.

But he also claims once the mercury is 'charged' in this manner, throwing it on red hot iron will cause it to change to gold. So far everyone who's tried this just watched as the mercury instantly vaporized and then fell from the sky like metal rain as it cooled off. Beautiful and very poisonious, but no gold! lol

There is no science to back any of those claims. I'm not even sure where to begin describing why it won't work.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

http://alchemi  ... this is where science stopped being the explanation.  Sorry, NickNick, but I went no further than that.

Well, mercury would absorb gamma rays like lead - and probably slightly better since it's denser.
