sterilizing PEG
« on: March 06, 2008, 07:14:39 AM »
Hallo all,

I was wondering if any chemist here could explain me if sterilizing PEG in an autoclave (20 minutes at 120°C) could damage the PEG structure and alter the characteristics of this PEG (polyethyleneglycerol).

cheers

PEG (polyethyleneglycerol)

Which one - polyethylene glycol or polyethyleneglycerol

PEG is relatively thermally stable
I guess polyethyleneglycerol is much less stable

It depends on what molecular weight (MW) that u r using. usually the higher the MW the more stable it is to temperature.

Instead of heating it in oven, u can also use azeotropic distillation to dry the PEG.

I used a very high molecular weight: 9000

I hope I didnt change or break down the PEG by using an autoclave.

I think it should be OK.

Anyhow, u can check its structure to check is there any change or not after u heated it.
