Energy Of Orbitals
« on: February 03, 2009, 08:34:57 PM »
Hello,

I have a quick question that i haven't been able to understand.

why does the 4s orbital "fill in" first, rather than the 3d?

Thank You

Simply because that's the order, the way the periodic table of elements work.

0 1 2 3 4 5 ...

Electrons are filled according to the energy of orbitals, lowest filled first. (Aufbau's rule) When it is unfilled, 4s orbital has lower energy than 3d, that is why 4s is filled first followed by 3d. To explain why 4s has lower energy than 3d, it has to do with the shape of the orbitals, which i'm not very familiar with to explain it to you.
No matters what results are waiting for us, it's nothing but the DESTINY!!!!!!!!!!!!
