active acidity vs total acidity
« on: February 25, 2009, 09:56:44 AM »
What is the difference between the "active acidity" and the "total acidity" of a solution, and how is each measured???

I have tried to find in this the textbook, classnotes, and online...but am coming up empty!

Not that I have heard these terms, but seems to me like they should be more or less obvious. Think about pH and amount of base needed to neutralize your lactic acid solution.

active acidity refers only to the hydrogen ions present in a solution due to the ionization of an acid. This is measured by using pH meters or pH indicator papers...

what is total acidity?
