Using IUPAC method?
« on: March 13, 2009, 09:49:01 PM »
Hello,
I am trying to name the following esters using the IUPAC method.

  • Propionsaure acid and Methanol
  • Acetic acid and Amyl Alcohol
  • Salicylic acid and 2-Propanol

I was looking at the code words and number of carbons:
  • code   no of carbons
    meth          1
    eth             2
    prop           3
    but             4
    pent           5
    hex            6

as well as the type of carbon carbon bonds:

an = only carbon-carbon single bonds
en = contains a carbon-carbon double bond

but I am still having problems creating the name of the esters. Any guidance will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Are you happy taking the names of esters and converting them back to structures and hence the constituent acid and alcohol?

What for instance are the acid and alcohol used to form ethyl ethanoate? pentyl methanoate?
