acid/base combinations
« on: September 21, 2009, 12:16:12 AM »
Having trouble with this question...

Which pairs of drug agents should not be mixed in the same syringe?
a) atropine sulfate/sodium valproate
b) morphine sulfate/ketamine hydrochloride
c) penicillin sodium/phenytoin sodium

The combination should be neutral. a) appears to be base/base, b) base/base, and c) acid/acid. Would the acid/acid combo be better for absorption?

Check again, can you list out why you think the first 4 items are bases (be specific).

I believe atropine sulfate is a basic salt because sulfate originates from sulfuric acid and that would make atropine a base.  Atropine sulfate would be a basic salt.  Valproate originates from valprioic acid and sodium would be a base, making this a basic salt as well.  The same applies to morphine sulfate as does atropine sulfate.  Hydrochloride is derived from HCL a strong acid so ketamine would be a base.  For c), sodium is a base so that would make penicillin and phenytoin bases.

This is what I could gather from the sources I've used.  For an upcoming exam, I have to be able to identify acidic and alkaline drugs within a limited amount of time.

In my opinion, a is the correct.

Attention:
a) acidic/basic
b) acidic/acidic
C) basic/basic
