gypsum and thermate / thermite
« on: May 09, 2009, 07:10:05 PM »
Steve Jones reckons thermate (brand name for thermite) was used to demolish the World Trade Centers. He reckons he has proof.

This is a quote from the NIST report following events on 9/11/2001

Analysis of the WTC steel for the elements in thermite/thermate would not necessarily have been conclusive. The metal compounds also would have been present in the construction materials making up the WTC buildings, and sulfur is present in the gypsum wallboard used for interior partitions.

3 questions
As chemists can you tell me what normally happen when you burn gypsum?
How could you relate proportions of trace substances in the fine dust that surrounded ground zero to the presence of gypsum or thermite?
Is there another forum that the technical part of this discussion belongs to?

People more often than not get really worked up about this issue, lets keep it level headed.

I am not chemist, I am laymen seeking expert opinion. This thread will be relayed to another thread with the Institute of Structural Engineers.

Thanks!
