Help With Children's Substance
« on: May 10, 2009, 10:08:47 PM »
Hello!  I need chemistry advice from someone A LOT smarter than me.  There are many recipes on the internet taking advantage of the chemical reaction between Elmer's Glue and 20 Mule Team Borax.  The result is a child's goop / slime which they love playing with.  I like to make this but the product is too rubbery.  It wiggles and has an odd feeling to it, but it doesn't stretch--it snaps, regardless of how much it's worked.   I’ve tried to change the proportions of glue to Borax and water to glue, but it’s still the same consistency.  Kneading it makes no difference.

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to make it less rubbery and bouncy?   Here is the recipe I’m using:

1 c Elmer's Glue
3/4 c water
Mix together.

4 tsp. Borax
1/2 c water
Dissolve Borax in water.  Add glue mix to Borax mix. Stir until mass forms.  Pull it out and work it with fingers.

Thanks so much!
