Gelation of Latex
« on: July 22, 2009, 01:33:52 AM »
I am doing a project on the characterization of the polymer formed from the gelation of magnetic nanoparticle. The magnetic nanoparticle is magnetite coated with styrene polymer, it is treated like colloid, which will cluster and become unstable with the addition of salt solution like NaCl. However, there is also a need to add styrene monomer and DVB with the swelling ratio of 9:1 and AIBN initiator to the latex. I do not understand what is the significance of adding styrene, DVB and AIBN and what is swelling ratio? please *delete me*!

AIBN is an initiator for styrene polymerization.  In addition, it releases nitrogen gas and could be foaming.  DVB (divinyl benzene) is cross-linking agent.  The swelling ratio may be a volume change during the reaction.
