bromo/chloro benzene reaction with ethanol

Hi!

I did an experiment of bromobenzene with AgNO3 + ethanol. From my understanding SP2 carbons do no undergo Sn1 reactions so no Sn1 reaction should proceed. However, my solution turned faint cloudy, does anyone know what kind of side reaction is that?

Probably the suspension that formed is AgBr. Some ethanol reacted with bromobenzene to form an ethoxybenzene, realising HBr. Maybe silver acted as a catalyst by "pulling" the bromide from the benzene.

I am not sure but that would be my guess.

But what kind of reaction is that? I thought that halide deactivate aromatic rings and so the possibility that there would be eletrophilic aromatic substitution reactions is tiny.
