how to convert %w/v to ppm?

lets say a sample has a concentration of 0.5%w/v
then how to work it out to ppm?
0.5 divide by million?

Well, % just means parts per hundred - so how do you think you convert that to parts per million?

Not in this case as its % w/v (it would if it was w/w).

5% is 5g/100 mL ideally you need the density of the solution (g/mL) to calculate a g/g value which you could convert to ppm

A sample of what? A gas or a liquid? It makes a difference.
