Aldol condensation product of hexan-5-onal
« on: July 17, 2005, 04:57:26 PM »
Hi,

My question:

What is the condensation product of hexan-5-onal?

My answer: 2-methylpent-2-enal

Is this correct? I'm not to sure since I'm having problems with aldol condensation.

Please Help and Thank You :)

We have the reaction mechanism in out name reactions section. Check it out.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Thank You for the mechanism, but I still having problems with figuring it out. For example I know that for the condensation of ethanal is going to produce
CH3CH=CHCOH, but when it comes to larger sequences I begin to have troubles.

Here's how carry out the problem.

CH3COCH2CH2CH2CHO ----> CH3CH(OH)CH2CH2CH2CHO-----> ?

then i get lost. I guess my question is where would place the additional hexan-5-onal after I deprotanate the hexan-5-onal.

Thank You :)

My guess is that this aldol condensation only involves one molecule of your substrate, if that helps.

Your first answer is one possibility, could you imagine a different aldol reaction from the same starting material?
