Metal indicator electrodes
« on: March 17, 2010, 07:44:35 PM »
In the lab we used a silver electrode as the indicator electrode and silver-silver chloride as the reference electrode to determine concentration of halides.  Now we have to determine another metal indicator electrode for determining other ions.  What I found out Pt, Au or carbon indicator electrodes can be used for aren't selective for specific analyte.  There are ion selective electrodes but they aren't metal. I know in electrorefining of copper we use copper wire as a cathode. But if these other metal indicator electrodes aren't specific how can you determine what ions are being detected??? Or is that all determined using the Nernst Equations.

Ag/AgBr
Ag/AgI

This is about pH electrode, but should give you some information to think about:

If you have only Cu in the solution (or it is much much more concentrated than impurities), then you don't need to worry about the selectivity.

there are many types of the ISE but they are not identical
glass electrode
metal electrode
solid memrane electrode
liuid membrane electrode
others
they may be different in their response and theory like glass  membrane which needs the hydrated gel layer to work better but meatl electrode different as they apply the nernest equation directly
as two independent electrodes

you should use ISE for determinig of other ions. Electrorefing and Potentiometry are two differnt things. since metal electrodes facilitate sites for redox reaction of any ion in the solution they are not selective. So u cant use any metal electrode for determining of analytel in a complex meatrix. U should use ISE s for each ion you ar intersting. If your standreds and samples are not identcal then you will have to do some standard addition and use linearized plot. (Available in Harris) pls contact me for more informations.
