What reactions/steps (ex. dehydration) take place in nickel(II) chloride hexachloride when heated from 0-325 C, NOT UNDER A STREAM OF HCl and NOT upon heating in thionyl chloride?

I was assuming that it would dehydrate, but I just read somewhere that heating alone does not afford the anhydrous nickel dichloride.  So now I am not quite sure what is going on under these conditions.

Thank you for your time
