DCM with mol sieves
« on: March 23, 2011, 10:33:21 AM »
When I make my solution of DCM-d2 gas and water "free" I add some molsieves before I freeze pump thaw. Over time I always see some powder formation, which I do not see with other solvents.

Anybody any idea what that is?

My first instinct is that its pulverized sieves which are for some reason less flocculant in DCM than your other solvents. I've noticed that the sieves I have in Et2O have less dust than the ones I keep in ACN (neither deuterated). I don't really have a decent explanation for this though. I find its just best to leave the dusty ones undisturbed when removing solvent.

However, sieves can catalyze some reactions.

Do you have abnormal peaks in your spectra?

No it doesnt intervene with my reactions. I was just wondering what it was.
