A few chemistry questions i need help with for homework
« on: June 19, 2012, 06:25:01 PM »
Hey I just wanted some help with these questions for homework.
I think i know the answers but not 100% sure, i've put what i think, if you could help me that would be fantastic!

Question 1
Hydrochloric acid is a typical acid with the formula HCI.  Sodium hydroxide is a typical alkali with the formula NaOH.

a)What ions are present in aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid?
Is it H^+ CI^- (hydrogen and chlorine)

b)What ions are present in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide?
Is it NaOH - sodium, oxygen, hydrogen

c)When hydrochloric acid solution and sodium hydroxide solution react together, water and a solution of a salt are produced.
i)What type of reaction occurs?
Is it neutralisation?

ii)Name the salt produced?
Sodium Chloride (NaCI)

iii)Deduce the ionic equation for the reaction?
NaHo+HCI = NaCI+H20

Question 2
X and Y are white powders. X is insoluble in water, but Y is soluble and its solution has a PH of 3. When X is added to a solution of Y, bubbles form and a gas is produced.

a)One of the white powders is an acid. Is it X or Y? How do you know?
Is the answer:
X
As it was insoluble and when it was added to y the solution started to bubble.

b) The other white powder is calcium carbonate. What is the gas produced in the reaction?
I think Carbon Dioxide

Thanks!

Pretty good, but

b)What ions are present in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide?
Is it NaOH - sodium, oxygen, hydrogen

That is not correct.  It also doesn't match what you wrote for the HCl ions ... those had charges.  Can you fix this one, on your own, based on what you know?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

NaOH => Na+ + OH-

What happens now  if Hydrochloric acid is added.

Perhaps you have seen somewhere what kind of ions are produced when sodium hydroxide dissociates? Check your book, check your notes, or even just Google for "sodium hydroxide dissociation".

Edit: Hunter beat me, but nonetheless I posted to show you how you can help yourself without asking others. We are keen to help, but we prefer you give you tools, not ready answers (this is also directed to Hunter).

@ Borek You are right. Sorry.

But sometimes the people need one hint. Clear they can use a book or internet  and look by themself.

Hydrochloric acid is a typical acid with the formula HCI.

No it is not, the formula is HCl  Cl is the symbol for chlorine while C is the symbol for Carbon and I is the symbol for iodine.

a)What ions are present in aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid?
Is it H^+ CI^- (hydrogen and chlorine)

So the correct answer is H+ and Cl-

No and yes.  What does an acid do to pH?

hi
Yes the question a) is correct.
In part b) the ions are the following H (plus) & OH (Minus)
In c) yes it is a neutralisation because in this reaction salt and base are cancelling each other out.
ii) yes NaCl is correct.
iii) is also correct but instead of the equal sign write an arrow which indicates a good chemical reaction.

Q2)
A) the powder Y is an acid because it has got a ph value which is on the acidic side.
B) yes that is correct.
