How will this reaction work?  I assume its an acid base.

yah i think so, but i feel like i could also eliminate to give magnesium hydroxide. depending on the direction of approach. ???

It's effectively an acid/base system. The reaction is exemplified as follows.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!
