Systematic vs Random Error
« on: October 22, 2012, 10:21:12 PM »
A Class A 10 ml pipette has a tolerance of ±0.02ml. Is this uncertainty primarily
systematic error or random error? After calibration, the pipette is found to deliver a
mean volume of 10.007 ml with a standard deviation of ±0.0036 ml. Is this
uncertainty primarily systematic error or random error?

This was an exam question that just appeared on my test this afternoon. I said both uncertainties were random errors. Should I cringe because I was wrong, or should I scream of joy because I was correct!? :)
