IUPAC and common name - a difficult molecule to name!
« on: December 21, 2012, 06:20:06 AM »
Hello, first time I'm here!

I want to name sec-butyl-ethyl-amine by it's systematic name, but I'm not sure how to think when naming this molecule. I'm sorry that I can't provide you with the structure but atleast I can give you the systematic name and perhaps you can tell me how to think.

Common name: sec-butyl-ethyl-amine
Systematic name: 3-methyl-N-propyl-1-butanamine.

Many thanks!

Edit: C-C-C(-C)-N-C-C

Why don't you try to enter the structure using SMILES?

I edited the post, thanks for the link, I had no idea - very good stuff I must say. I didn't expect that I could enter a chemical structure in a forum.

ChemSketch calls it N-ethylbutan-2-amine.

ChemSketch calls it N-ethylbutan-2-amine.

Maybe the solutions manual is wrong. If anyone has the book it's Essential Organic Chemistry International edition (2nd edition), chapter 3, problem 41 J.

Would you say the solutions manual is wrong? What do you think?

Hehe, I know right! Though, I'm usually I'm in a chemical subforum of some kind which doesn't have it

You will have to wait for an organiker to comment on the naming.

IUPAC name is (butan-2-yl)(ethyl)amine according to my usual source.

Alright, well thanks guys, I trust you know what you're saying so I'll take your word and cross out the wrong textbook answer. It's awful that textbooks have errors in their solutions manual, especially when that's all I have to go by.
