Metallic Compound Found at Beach

Hello Everyone,

About a year ago at a beach in Oregon, I found these things with my metal detector. They look like gray melted metal chunks. I was wondering how it is possible to figure out what they are. They have white salt like stuff on them now that wasn't there before.

Hematite, which is an iron oxide, looks kind of like a glob of molten metal that's solidified.  The salt, if the rock was wet to begin with, may have crystalized when the rock dried off.
