Starch & Glycogen
« on: March 12, 2006, 06:04:14 PM »
Hi

I hope you can help me, i have been studying a nutrition course and one of the questions i am asked is that i need to provide 2 similarities and 2 differences between starch and glycogen.

I can find 1 for each. being these: similarities: Glycogen like starch contains glucose monomers and differences: that Glycogen is a branched chain. but i cannot for the life of me find anything else.

I have very little knowledge of chemistry and was hoping that someone could help me out

thanks

Steve

Think about which organisms store glucose as starch and which organisms store glucose as glycogen.  For another similarity, think about function.

Hi Thanks for the reply. I took another look at the documentation i have.

Plants store starch and animals store glucogen.

Both used as an energy store/source?

im not sure if these are correct.

Yes, indeed. Plants get the glucose they need from their starch and we, the animals  :), from glycogen.

Another difference is that glycogen requires less solvating water, because it would reduce motility.
