demineralized water vs tap water
« on: April 18, 2014, 08:49:24 AM »
Hallo all,

a quick question: what is the easiest way to distinguish tap water from demineralized water ?

I know the electric conductivity is an option (to measure this), but I don't have the equipment by hand here.

Any other ideas?

Evaporate it and weigh?

Nah, I know that's not convenient.  It realty depends on how chlorinated your tap water is, but where I'm working now, the tap water makes a reaction with silver nitrate.  But this is more a coincidence, and not really a test for tap water vs DI
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

I would agree with Arkon, evaporate a few ml (depending on the precision of your balance you may need more) and measure the total dissolved solids by weight.
