Ion Chromatography data mM -> mg/l?
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:31:38 AM »
Hi everyone, I have what I think is a simple question but I don't want to get confused...

I have obtained data from ion chromatography which gives me phosphate anion concentration in mM. I want to convert this to mg/l, is it as simple as mM =  mmol/L = x MW mg/L?

Furthermore, at what point does one take dilution factors into account. The samples were diluted 10x. Example data is 0.2955 and 0.3062 mM.

Yes.

Doesn't matter when you divide by ten.

Thanks very much

Divide by 10?

I had 5ml sample and 45ml ultrapure water, giving a dilution factor 10, so say

0.5209 mM = 0.5209 mmol/l = 0.5209*94.9714 = 49.47 mg/l, then divide by 10 to take into account the factor?

Sorry, brain fart. Division is to calculate concentration after dilution, that's not what you are interested in, you won't it the other way around - you are interested in initial concentration, so you have to multiply by 10.

Doesn't matter if you multiple concentration expressed in mol/L (before conversion to mg/L) or mg/L - final result is the same.
