Redox help
« on: July 31, 2014, 05:41:03 AM »
At school we are doing redox and today's experiment was the electrolysis of ZnCl2(aq). Zinc metal formed on the cathode, chlorine has was produced from the anode and the solution because H2O. I am confused as to why zinc metal formed on the cathode instead of hydrogen?

Thanks very much for your time

U must have a look of the electrochemical series to see which oxidizing and reducing agents react preferentially

On the anode,OH- is likely to react according to the series, but why chlorine gas is formed,i believe that the ZnCl2 solution is CONCENTRATED ,is it?
