chirality center vs stereocenter??

What are the differences? Do not both require 4 different groups around the carbon?

And i read that 'All chiral centers are stereo centers but all stereo centers are not always chiral centers'  What is meant by that?

Cis and trans-2-butene differ by stereochemistry, but not chirality.

So if i use an example here, in my textbook, it says if there is no or only one stereocenter formed in the product, the stereochem. becomes irrelevant. In this case, i figured there is no new stereocenter formed except the carbon with the alcohol on secondary position.  Is my reasoning wrong?

And what is your reasoning?

As was pointed out by orgopete, there are molecules with different stereochemistry while they are not chiral (or opticaly active). There are also molecules without chiral or asymetric carbon which are opticaly active.

well my reasoning was that stereochem should not matter, and thus i could write down the product as simple line drawing. But the correct answer is as shown above. And im not getting why that is correct still...
