Fractional Distillation of water from butan-1-ol, please help?
« on: October 21, 2014, 08:09:26 PM »
Hi there, I would really love your help !

I have an upcoming Chemistry exam, and one of the question areas I'm stuck on is the fractional distillation of water from butan-1-ol.

Why is fractional distillation the best method for the separation of water from butan-1-ol? Is it because the boiling points of both are similar, that distillation wouldn't separate? What is the process?
Also, is there an equation - word / chemical - for this separation ?

Thank you very much for your help ! :)
