Non-Fertilizer Usage/Market for Nitric Acid
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:25:39 AM »
Hi everyone--I'm not a chemist or chemical engineer, so forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask this question. I'm an economist doing some research on the market for nitric acid uses, and I'm wondering about the market for nitric acid. I know most of the nitric acid produced in the U.S. is used on-site for production of ammonium nitrate/fertilizer, but I'm trying to find out information about who or what industries might use small quantities of nitric acid and the concentrations used, particularly at less than/greater than 90 percent, but also less than/greater than 70 percent. I've come across this:

http://www.icis.com/resources/news/2008/05/19/9124327/chemical-profile-nitric-acid/

which is the most authoritative source I could find so far. But any additional information, especially at different concentration levels, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ken Cannon

Can we assume you looked at the WIKI and its references on the topic?

Yes. I'm particularly interested in uses given different concentrations.

Looking at the references listed the following seemed promising.
Michael Thiemann, Erich Scheibler, Karl Wilhelm Wiegand, "Nitric Acid, Nitrous Acid, and Nitrogen Oxides" in Ullmann Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry 2005, Wiley-VCH, Weinheim. doi:10.1002/14356007.a17_293

I have not read it or have access - Just a quick look at the titles in the references.
