How to store room temp unstable compounds ??
« on: December 16, 2014, 12:21:45 PM »
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to store room temp unstable compounds? Freezer sounds like the best option but should I keep my compounds in a solution? One of my compound is a white solid the other is an oil. They are E/Z stillbenes if anyone is interested

Generally, dilute solutions of reagents are even less stable in solution.  Ultimately, you'll have to check yourself by keeping them in the fridge, and also preparing them fresh, then compare them both in your application, to determine how long they're still usable.

It depends on what the source of instability is. Deep freezer is the go-to solution, but storing under inert atmosphere or in the dark can also help, if oxidative or photochemistry (or both) is responsible for the decomposition.

I've had success with freezing compounds in anhydrous benzene.

I would store frozen in benzene.  It will extend the life of the compound over just storing neat in the freezer, whether or not its actually soluble in benzene.  If radical reactions are a problem you can add a touch of inhibitor (as long as it doesn't interfere with your next reaction)
When in doubt, avoid the Stille coupling.
