Finding a substitute for N-methyl-D-glucamine
« on: January 27, 2015, 09:43:11 PM »
I am currently doing an experiment in my organic lab where we are taking ibuprofen and adding N-methyl-D-glucamine to create diastereomeric salts. After doing so, we will add toluene to dissolve the (R,S) salt to leave us with the (S,S) salt which we will then acidify with HCl to obtain (S)-(+) ibuprofen.

However, my lab does not have access to N-methyl-D-glucamine so I was trying to find a possible substitute for it. Any suggestions?

Strange!
If you are doing an organic lab I would expect the institute to have all the chemicals available.
Ask your demonstrator for it.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!
