Benzaldehyde acetal protecting group

Can you get away with protecting a 1,2-diol with benzaldehyde acetal in the presence of an epoxide??
If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the precipitate

It would be more prudent to protect the diol first then make the epoxide.
If you used tosic acid and anhydrous copper sulphate it may just work.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!
