How to test impurities

I have a compound which is contaminated with impurities, what test can I do to find out what the impurities are, the compound being a organic cyclic/benzene plus side chain (H/C/O/N). NMR GC-MS HPLC etc.

HPLC-MS or GC-MS are your friend. If its reaction you did (ie. have some idea what the impurities might be) then you are quite good with just APCI / ESI ionization, if its just random sample you were given and have no idea what might be present then you need something like MS-MS or different ionization method (EI) that gives you more fragments and thus more information about the structure
