Species, components and phases
« on: May 04, 2015, 11:00:25 AM »
Hello. I'd like some help in identifying the number of species, components and phases in the following reactions:

N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) = 2NH3 (g)

and

Ca (s) + 2RbCl (s) = CaCl2 (s) + 2Rb (g)

Thanks in advance!

I'd like to welcome you, Ksc: to the Chemical Forums.  According to the Forum Rules{click}, we want to see your attempt, so please click on that link, read the contents, and comply with our rules, so we can help you.

This is a learning forum, and we like to help people help people help themselves, can you start with some of the questions you asked?  How are you defining "phase" in this case?  And can you list those?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

In the first reaction I would think that the number of phases would be 3, but according to my book it's only one. In the 2nd reaction i'd think that the number of phases would be 4 as well which is correct.

Will you define phase for us?
