Identification Help?
« on: May 26, 2015, 06:16:31 PM »
So, I stumbled upon this structure mapped out on a bar bathroom stall door (Really. I'm not making this up, I promise.) So, of course, I was curious and proceeded to whip out my phone to investigate. I searched extensively, even breaking down the individual compounds, and could not find it. I also tried creating the structure on ChemSpider but could not replicate it (it seemed to keep correcting it to show otherwise than as it is in the picture). From what I've read, I think it is incorrectly depicted, but I haven't studied chemistry in years, so I have no idea. Could anyone throw me a bone or at least point me in the right direction? I have no doubt in my mind that this will be a pointless effort, especially considering where I found it, but my OCD is driving me crazy on this one. Thanks for any advice!

It's dopamine, a catecholamine (sympathomimetic) hormone that is a neurotransmitter in brain and makes you feel anxious.

Compound is in fact slightly incorrect (OH- on the left side should be HO-). You can always check stoichiometric formula C9H11NO2 in google (first page contains this compound) or in wikipedia (only 5 compound with this formula are listed)

Excellent remark for the -OH but the correct stoichiometric formula is C8H11NO2. The stoichiometric formula C9H11NO2 is obviously a typing error, as being understood from the overall text.
