Vanadyl Sulfate
« on: July 17, 2015, 04:03:15 AM »
Hello,

Could someone tell me why the vanadium in vanadyl sulfate has an oxidation number of +2?

In this picture:
http://static.coleparmer.com/large_images/AGROS21484.jpg

It shows vanadyl sulfate making 4 bonds with 3 other oxygens. Since oxygen has a oxidation number of +2 usually, shouldn't the vanadium have a oxidation number of +4.

Thanks

Where have you seen that it has an oxidation state of +2?

I wasn't sure if it was or not because it wasn't really explained properly. I assumed it was +2 but now I realise that it could be different. So could you confirm then that the vanadium would have an oxidation number of +4?

Thanks

Why not use GOOGLE to find a periodic table like

 http://www.ptable.com/

And look up

Vanadium Oxidation states    5, 4, 3, 2, 1, −1 (an amphoteric oxide)

for yourself

Or use WIKI

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanadium
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanadyl_sulfate

to read about

 Vanadium and Vanadyl sulfate

You might notice the sentence
Quote
It features the vanadyl ion, VO2+, which has been called the "most stable diatomic ion."

From looking at your past posts plus this post I get the feeling we are not helping you learn how to learn.

V in VO is +4 and Oxy -2 with VO = +2 ... In water VO2+ gives a bright blue color. VO2+ + SO42-  ::equil:: VOSO4
