Nomenclature Question Ketone
« on: September 28, 2015, 06:17:57 PM »
I'm having a hard time figuring out why 3-(5-oxohexyl)cyclohexanone is named the way it is. Where is the (5-oxohexyl) coming from?

My book gives examples on how to name simple ketones such as acetone and petanone but not 3-(5-oxohexyl)cyclohexanone.

Any help is appreciated.

Is this from Kaplan? I think there's a typo there, compare http://www.chemsynthesis.com/base/chemical-structure-4545.html  does that name make more sense?

I realize that I put the wrong chemical structure before. I've uploaded the correct one. You are right sjb its from kaplan, I am just confused as to how the naming works since the book didn't go into great detail on how to name more complex ketones.

The name of the compound is 3-(5-oxohexyl)cyclohexanone.

I can't seem to edit my earlier post so I've added the new image under this one.

You are able to draw cyclohexanone right? Could you then draw 3-hexylcyclohexanone?
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex
