What are the active ingredients in scale inhibitors,especially those used in oil and gas, and water operated equipment?

Also, consider running a search on this forum.  We recently had a lengthy discussion on scale inhibitors.  Even  if it doesn't answer your question, you at least have a background to ask more complete questions.

What are the active ingredients in scale inhibitors,especially those used in oil and gas, and water operated equipment?
The ingredients am using are Ethylene Glycol, Acrylate polymer and Sodium Silicate. Anything wrong with this formulation and how can I make it better.
