Jim is working in a lab at 293.15 K. He has a solution of pure ethanol but he wants to make a 2L solution of 50% ABV alcohol for drinking. What mass of water and ethanol should he combine?

The wording probably expects you to add the volumes of water and ethanol. Though, a more accurate computation should mind that this mixture shrinks a little bit. Not huge, but perfectly observable.
