I have problem that says
What volume of a 95% alcohol solution should be used to prepare 1000 ml of 50% alcohol.
The answer is 525 ml but I'm not sure how to determine this.

How much alcohol is in 1000 mL of 50% alcohol solution?
How much 95% alcohol contains this amount?
By the way, I get 526 mL.

This is not a good question, as it doesn't define what kind of % - mass or volume - it means (and the answers are different).
Seems like it is about volume %. Follow Dan's advice.

In addition, ethanol and water shrink when mixed. The question must ignore this.
