Preserving DNA
« on: May 12, 2016, 09:19:30 AM »
Hello. I would like to learn how to preserve DNA samples from my family members until such time that we can participate in a family genetics study. Since many are on very fixed incomes and the oldest generation is in their 80s, I want to do this myself. So, I was thinking hairs with follicles or saliva. I have .12 oz/3.55 ml amber bottles that I use for my business and thought that might be a good container. I also have lip balm pots about the same size but they are plastic. I could store either in a cool dark place on my lower level, refrigerator or freezer but the latter two would be less dependable should the power go out at my  home. I could add high % ethel alcohol, if that is best, thinking Everclear. Any thoughts or advise?
