Assay percent in spec. without method being specified
« on: June 05, 2016, 04:22:06 AM »
I'm looking at a Flavoring Substance Spec. at the UN-Food & Agricultural Organization website which says "Assay min %" as 97%. (for Benzylcarbinyl butyrate)

But no method is specified. In such cases is there an implied method or protocol to be used?

Thanks @AWK.

I did refer to that Volume but I still don't find guidance on the specific protocol to use for this assay. Perhaps I missed something. Did you have a specific page / section you wanted me to look at?

The method in question likely that s somewhere in the compendium in question, or in a related document.  Without the actual document in question, its hard to know where it is.  I'm not saying this is a difficult process, but if you want it to be quick and free, you may B expecting too much.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

OK. So what you are saying is that the method must be specified somewhere I just need to look harder. Will do.

It's an UN Org. So I expect it's free. e.g. Vol4 @AWK referred to is freely available on the site. Just doesn't contain the specific protocol info.

But even if not I'm willing to pay for the protocol the way I do at ASTM / ISO etc. ; but I just don't see a link to buy either.

I'm used to seeing an assay value with a note / link to the test-protocol; the absence of any such hint here made me wonder if there's some default method obvious to people skilled in the art that I'm missing.
